Gran Canaria: Tastes good to me!
The staple ingredients of the local cuisine are a range of fresh vegetables, fruit and fish. The meals are typically light in nature as they are easier to digest in such a warm climate. Meat does feature in many of the dishes, with steak being imported from Spain or South America.
An essential part of the Canary Islands diet is Gofio, stone-ground flour made from toasted barley, maize and wheat. It forms the basis of many local soups, sauces and delicious local deserts. The most popular Gran Canaria desert is bienmesabe, which translates literally into ‘it tastes good to me’, the dish is made up of ground almond, lemon rind, sugar and eggs. The abundance of tropical fruit also features highly in any desert menu.
