Anyone booking an Athens holiday this year will no doubt want to indulge in some of the fantastic local cuisine. Dining in Athens is more of an experience that a necessity, something to be savoured and enjoyed at length.

Meals in this Greek city are never rushed and many consider their evening meal as a form of entertainment. Those enjoying an Athens holiday will quickly discover that the Athenians tend to dine late; many tables are not booked until at least 10pm with many restaurants staying open till 2am.

During an Athens holiday, you are never far away from a dining establishment. From local tavernas to upmarket restaurants, there is something for all tastes. The basis of a Greek diet is found in the locally grown produce. Visitors can expect to find a vast amount of cheese, oils, fruit, nuts and vegetables within a Greek menu. Olives and lemons are Greece’s biggest exports and feature widely in many Greek dishes.

There are some fantastic local delicacies to try including barbounia, a fish served with garlic, and fava which is a chickpea puree served hot with olive oil. Those with a sweet tooth should indulge in the baklava, a sticky honey pastry which is extremely popular in Greece. No Athens holiday would be complete without washing your meal down with a glass of ouzo!

During your Athens holiday make sure you head to Plaka, which offers a fantastic array of traditional tavernas whereas Athens city is ideal for an upmarket restaurant experience. Many Greek restaurants have traditional music playing whilst you eat, a perfect accompaniment to an authentic local dish!
